It got some thoughts swirling: Love my body. Love where I live. Love what is. It sounds like unschooling. I could unschool my body.
Wait. Unschool my body? What would that look like?
If I were going to unschool my body...
I would make lots of cool stuff available to it (gear and hikes and massages).
I would spend time with it.
I would have fun with it and do things it enjoys.
I would enjoy it.
I would provide it with a fun and colorful variety of foods.
I would feel good about it.
I would feel good.
I would not disparage it.
I would not feel ashamed of it.
I would not compare it to other bodies in negative ways.
I would not abuse it.
And I absolutely would not let society or any individual tell me what it should be.
(Update 7/2/10: Tara Wagner continues exploring this concept here.)

Honestly, I couldn't bear to go to that link. Your comments in this post were informative enough in and of themselves.

I hadn't. Thanks for the links!
i love how unschooling- in the sense of tearing down the walls of "education" and all that goes with that, has led to unschooling everything- religion, the medical system, food, the institution of marriage.....
Once you start to really examine your thoughts and belief systems, the whole world opens.
REally loved your post.
beautiful!
Ronnie, this is so important! I did my master's thesis on eating disorder prevention, but I think you nailed it so beautifully in this post and this is one reason why whole life radical unschooling is so important... I believe it does give our kids (and us!) a way to connect with and love our bodies as a result of a flip in attitude from control to nurture.
Lovely, lovely post.
"a flip in attitude from control to nurture"
Yes, this! Thanks for finding the concise phrase.
The control approach to life is so deeply entrenched in our society. Control and resist. But unschooling, and meditation, and so much of what I'm inviting/welcoming into my life recently are showing me that letting go and embracing and nurturing are ever so much more effective and rewarding.
Wonderful. Thank you.
beautiful!
That's so beautiful. Thanks.
this is so perfect ronnie. as i read this i realized that THIS explains/describes the inner change i have gone through with regard to my body in the last couple of years - and hey, it coincides with my journey into radical unschooling! :)
Absolutely Brilliant Ronnie !
