The Doings Report

That LIFE is Good writeup is still coming. Maybe. But right now I just feel like rambling. Aimlessly. Without purpose. Maybe this won't even be a Doings Report but a Lack-of-Doings Report.

I think—and I squirm as I write this out of fear of angering the schedule gods—that we have a completely commitment-free weekend ahead. Holy loose ends, Batman!

I have a cold, one of two variants of the Conference Crud that are going around. Boy, did I get lucky, because the other one involves vomit. I'll take my annoyingly drippy nose any day.

MJ came home for one day and then went back to Oregon. I think her at-home time is less than her away time these days. So far I'm doing okay with this transition. I spoke to Cherie (my friend and former stepmother) on the phone today, and she pointed out that these separations are the natural result of raising independent kids. "We reap what we sow," I said. "Yes." And perhaps that is why I'm doing okay with this transition. For our kids to have the confidence and connections and motivation to build their own lives has been one of our goals all along.

Two of my very favorite authors (Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas) had book releases on my birthday. I bought the books and then went to LIFE is Good. Not much reading time there. So, I've spent some of my sickie time this week reading them and am very pleased with both.

New books always run out of pages too fast.

I am still processing my LiG talk. I think it went well, but I am too close to it to know for sure. I wish I could have filmed the audience while I delivered it so that (now that I am out of the semi-fugue state I enter when I'm speaking publicly) I could go back and check out reactions.

I had a big deadline before LiG. Deadline, LiG, Conference Crud. That's my last few weeks in a nutshell.

I am thinking about writing a novel. I am often thinking about writing a novel. In fact, in my years on this planet, I have done WAY more thinking about writing a novel than actual writing of said novel. But there are intriguing chapters tucked here and there. And one of these times when I think about writing a novel I know I will actually do it.

"I know I will actually do it." That is true, but I did not know it until I typed it. Interesting.

I made a bazillion friends at the conference. That is a slight exaggeration. But I did. The tribe just keeps on growing...

Speaking of which, unschooling is back in the news. Nightline (with Juju again, ick) and The View. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the hatchet jobs clips. I want the media to forget they ever heard of unschooling. They are making the traditionalists nervous. That is never a good thing.

Fear is the mother of morality. ~ Nietzsche

Ja.

Done rambling. Auf Wiedersehen.

Chit chat

After a long Twitter-free spell, I have been tweeting again the past couple of days. My desire to communicate minutiae seems to come in waves, and for whatever reason (etiquette?), I do not wish to use Facebook for these tweetish communications. (My status updates on FB tend to be about chunks of time—e.g., "Ronnie Maier has her kids back!!"—rather than random moments here and there—e.g., "I am trimming my toenails.")

But what do I do when my desire to blab details exceeds my tweet tolerance level? I write a megatweet blog post, obviously. It probably makes for pretty boring stuff, but I suppose Blogging Without Obligation means I'm not obliged to be especially interesting.

I read "The Five Languages of Love" tonight. I first heard about this book from Beth Fuller and have been enjoying a broader appreciation of all Frank does for me since then. It's been lovely to take every clean dish as an "I love you." You know? But now Frank and I have both figured out our official Love Language profiles, and it turns out that "Acts of Service" isn't his love language any more than it is mine. Oh, well, I still appreciate those clean dishes.

Interestingly, Frank and I scored almost identically for our profiles, with "Physical Touch" and "Quality Time" tied for the top position. Gary Chapman, the author, says partners don't necessarily enjoy such fluency in each other's love language, so this might be a contributing factor to why Frank and I get on so well. It also seems possible that one of us started out with one of those as primary and the other with the other, but that after more than two decades of adjusting to each other's needs, our priorities have been adapted.

The other two languages are "Affirmations" and "Receiving Gifts."

Chloe and I went to the library this evening and each brought home huge armloads of books. Hers are mostly about getting into college, something that is very much on both girls' minds right now. Mine are mostly about geology, just because.

I missed House and Castle last night. (Monday is "guys named after buildings" night on TV.)

Our house still smells like bacon, 14 hours after breakfast.

After a surprisingly pleasant couple of days, the damp is rolling in again. MJ has been hogging the "We're season ticketholders and don't you forget it even if we might want to after that game against the Cardinals" Seahawks throw blanket, so I'm sitting here wrapped in the dragonfly-dotted fleece blanket I won in the LIFE is Good silent auction last May. Cozy! All in all, though, I'd rather be in Arizona with Uncle Scott. (But I still wouldn't root for the Cards.)

If I'm still not working in November, I'm thinking about doing NaNoWriMo. But I might settle for NaBloPoMo. Both girls are also contemplating NNWM, so we may find ourselves entering into some serious computer negotiations. Anybody got a laptop we can borrow for a month? If not, I'll have to encourage Chloe to resume her nightowl thing. ;-)

Not being that much of a nightowl myself, I'm done now. Good night!

Too much for Twitter

I started tweeting and then realized I have several random things to say. I don't want to be like Stephen Fry and overtweet, so I'll just dump 'em all here. The first two are retweets, for the sake of posterity. (As if posterity will care.) The rest are new and happily not subject to a 140-character limit.

Feeling crabby for no good reason. Maybe mean, nasty, irritable Ronnie should go out for drinks with m.n.i. Laura...? (This is in response to a morning tweet from Laura warning us that m.n.i. Laura was pushing to get out.)

Chloe bought her bass. It's beautiful. But both girls have for the moment abandoned real guitars in favor of Rock Band. Go figure.

Frank had bridge prep done yesterday, so he is not a happy camper today. Going to the music store (normally a much loved outing) about did him in.

I should clarify: the Arizona house shopping Frank and I were doing was fantasy shopping. We have no serious plans to move, and if we did, I'm not sure we'd be homeowners. A more footloose lifestyle is attractive.

In related news, our tent trailer will be all paid off next month. We will never be homeless.

The neighbor girls came over to play with Chloe today. It's so sweet that they want to, and even sweeter that she goes along with it. She let them take their pick of some leftover Barbie stuff. Aside from a few treasured favorites and the bagful of good stuff we set aside for Effie, we are nearly Barbie-less. The end of an era indeed.

The clack of drumsticks on Rock Band drums is annoying. I'd much rather be listening to the real thing.

I want the Clean Sweep people to come and take care of my backyard. The heaps back there make me feel as trashy as they make our yard look.

I didn't go to the Goodwill today, and I really should have. The van is loaded with donations. Maybe it'll be doubly loaded by next Saturday.

The girls and I watched some Jay Walking and pseudo-Jay Walking videos this evening. People (presumably schooled people) didn't know who authored Romeo and Juliet, who bombed Pearl Harbor, whom the Palestinians are in conflict with, etc. WTF?!

Yes, my kids know those things. The one that stumped them and me was "Who was Beowulf's companion?" Frank would no doubt find our ignorance of that nearly as distressing as I found the others' ignorance of the "easier" questions.

P.S. Frank says Beowulf's pals were secondary and it wasn't a sensible question. We are redeemed. :-)

Water

I feel like blogging more but can think of nothing to say. "Water" keeps featuring in the titles I come up with. Maybe I'm thirsty.

On an unrelated subject, I've just eaten half a box of Aplets & Cotlets for dinner. Yum! One of Washington's finest products! That I managed to do this even though Frank and MJ are watching the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" downstairs, and I have seen and heard enough gushing brains to make me a little queasy, is a testament to the fine work done by Liberty Orchards for the past 80 years or so. Their history is fascinating and can be found here.

Chloe has vanished into her room, having discovered some forgotten treasures in my (deep) closet, which used to be her bedroom. I finally cleaned it out some last summer and organized her things-left-behind, but I guess I hadn't told her, because she was quite pleased when she went in there today. She found stuffed friends, the puppets she and MJ inherited from Lynn and me, various small mementos, and so on. It's like Christmas!

Earlier, she was rereading one of her books by Silver Ravenwolf, a magik/Wicca author, and was distressed to discover that Silver got her Norse mythology wrong. Chloe has done quite a bit of reading on/of Norse myths since the last time she read Silver's book, so she was able to immediately recognize the error when Silver said Freya was a moon goddess and Odin's wife. Not!

Me, I wouldn't have known the difference.

One of the concerns about homeschooling is that the kids will learn only what their parents know. Laughable concept to those of us living the life.

Another is that they will think only what their parents think. *snort* *snuffle* *guffaw* If that were true, most of my conversations with MJ in the past week could not have taken place, and the recent rather heated talk that MJ, Chloe, and I had about school would not have inspired me to introduce a talking stick into the mix. (We didn't have a talking stick handy, so we used my inhaler. This produced much laughter, but it did the job.)

How do I know what a talking stick is? I have no idea. I just picked it up somewhere. Maybe my kids told me, but I have the feeling the knowledge is older than they are. Maybe I saw one in a movie long ago. The closest I'd ever come to using one before this was passing around a little hacky-sack-type thing so a hearing-impaired coworker would know who was speaking.

Last night, Jon Stewart did this little "Devil Went Down to Georgia" thing to explain Georgia's runoff election process. MJ knew the song. How? I have no idea. Well, I have some idea: this is a woman with a serious passion for music. But this is also a 30-year-old novelty song! A country novelty song! Nevertheless, she got the joke.

Sandra Dodd has said that a lot of learning is about getting the joke, and vice versa.

Did you know I have a calm energy? Caren said so. It was news to me, but it's an interesting idea: Ronnie as calm person. Sometimes I probably manage it. And, hey, I have long fingernails now!

A new hopeful sign: Some abortion foes shifting focus
"...a growing number of antiabortion pastors, conservative academics and activists are setting aside efforts to outlaw abortion and instead are focusing on building social programs and developing other assistance for pregnant women to reduce the number of abortions."
Now maybe we can get something done.

Lieberman is being welcomed back into the fold. Ick.

Oops, gotta go, Chloe wants to use the computer. Later!
