The lessons of time

MJ, Frank, and Chloe—yesterday

My sister-in-law never got to hold her first baby. I have one friend whose son died at four or five and another whose daughter died at nine. One of my aunts lost her oldest son—and my grandmother, her first grandchild—when he was in his twenties.

If you need a reason to be nicer to your kids, any one of these women could give you one: Today could be your very last chance to do it.

Beyond the death card, as the mother of two young women who were toddlers one moment and teenagers the next, I can tell you that a childhood is incredibly short. Today may not be your last chance to make your child's childhood happier, but it is one of your last chances. And make no mistake: your chances will run out, and faster than you think.

Get busy! Right. Now.

I need no reminders, but I too never held my first son. Fortunately I have 5 beautiful kids now that I can be nice to every day!

We had 12 days, in NICU visits, with our second child, Elijah. His brother ans sister are thriving, which means time is flying by.

Thanks for the reminder.

My daughters are 20 yrs and almost 18 and I can definitely say that the time flies by! They are adults before you know it. Enjoy them and be nice while you have the chance, you never get to do it over.

One of my all-time touchstone blogs about this very topic; the fleetingness of time with our kids. Think you might like it.

You are absolutely right! You may have your children right there with you but they will not be "little" forever! Time does fly by and before you know, they are all grown up!

I have 5 children ... my youngest is now 8, my oldest, 18. I often wonder where my babies went!

Good reminder! Thank you! Off to hug some big kids before they grow any more! :)

Thanks for this. Time passes SO quickly for me these days; it's always good to receive a reminder about giving thanks.

I'm right there with you. So very grateful for all the moments that I would not have had without unschooling. Much love to you all <3

So true. It seems like it was just yesterday that my guys were babies. My oldest is now 16 and will be ready to fly out of the nest in only two years.

Luckily I haven't lost any of my children to death. I feel for the mothers that have.
